Identical or Fraternal?
Some days I wonder. There will be days when my girls look so much alike and other days they look so different from one another. On those days when they look so different I think "how can they be identical, they don't even look alike"? I know they are identical since the pathology report came back saying there was only one placenta, but it does still amaze me that they can look so different from one another. I realize identicals aren't actually" identical", they are more like "similar". Now I can easily see the differences in them, such as one baby has a round face while the other one has a more oblong shaped one. One baby has a more pointed ear on one side while the other baby has a more rounded ear. One baby weighs over a pound more than her sister. You wouldn't think a pound would make a big difference, but it does, especially when you're carrying them around. There is one big difference, one thing that will always give away which baby girl is which. The one thing that these two babies do not share is an eraser sized birthmark on one of them. The birthmark is in a place "where the sun don't shine" as the saying goes. So, if one day they try the ol' switch-a-roo on me, I guess I'll have to ask them to show me that place "where the sun don't shine"!! I'm sure glad that birthmark didn't show up anywhere else though, otherwise if it were visible then everyone would be able to tell them apart right away. It's kinda cool when people ask "how can you tell them apart"? I smile and say "there are things that are different about them". They look enough alike that unless you see them enough you might have a hard time telling them apart. I used to wonder how mothers of identicals could tell their babies apart. Now I know. When you spend day and night with identicals you will definitely realize the differences in them eventually. Once in awhile I have to give a second look at the baby I'm holding to make sure which one it is. After I see the babies face I know who it is right away.
I'm loving every minute of being an identical twin Mom. For now I'm not annoyed by people making over them, they're just curious. After all twins and multiples are fascinating.
I usually get the following questions asked...
Are they twins?
Are they a boy and a girl? (Even when they are both dressed in pink)
Are they both boys?
Are they both girls?
Are they identical?
How can you tell them apart?
I really don't mind answering their questions. Sometimes I laugh because they ask the gender question when both babies are dressed in pink with pink blankets on them.

Awww... can't wait for my twins to get here. Im due Sep 24th and currently we're leaning towards modi twins. My motherly intuitions tells me they ARE girls. I havent been sick AT ALL. There heartbeats are over 160 most of the time and my soon to be 3yr old daughter doesn't really want me to help her with anything lately. Mostly daddy. Your blog has answered plenty of my questions. By any chance if you still have all of their clothes once I find out for sure if they really are girls and you're giving away any of their things clothes swings etc please contact me at missprissy1891@gmail.com Thanks
Congratulations on your identical twins!! I would say they are identical if the membrane is not visible at weeks 7 and 11. I hope they find one at the next ultrasound.
You're lucky about not being sick. I started at 5 weeks, and it was major. You can read most of it on my blog. I originally started the blog about migraines during pregnancy until my 10th week ultrasound when we say there were 2 in there. We kind of had a feeling since my migraines started so early in the pregnancy. I had migraines and morning sickness throughout my twin pregnancy.
You are in for a wonderful roller coaster ride. Especially when they get here.
If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact me.
Unfortunately I sold most of their baby items at our local flea market. They just turned 5 and I'm not sure if I'm having anymore so I didn't want to hang on to it any longer...sorry. Have you tried to contact a local Mom of Multiples Group?
I never joined one since I had a lot of help from family etc.
My older children were about 4 and 6 when the twins were born and they were really excited about it. They've always been Mama's kids.
Please let me know how your next ultrasound turns out.
I surely will! If you don't mind sending me info on how to join the support group for moms of multiples to my email provided above that'll be great! I have tons of family helping also but with multiples more help is greatly appreciated! Thanks for everything!
